Category: Let's talk
So today was what I call a "down day." Nothing in particular went awry; it was just one of those days—you know the kind—when you worry about and doubt and overanalyze everything. I have many ways in which I cope with days like today, but the thought occurred to me before shutting down my laptop and heading to bed to post a Facebook status asking my friends to share their favorite inspirational quotes with me as a source of encouragement. Then the thought occurred to me that if I carried this idea over to a much larger community filled with mostly strangers, I'd get an even larger and ongoing response. Not to mention that I'm sure this will help many others besides myself. So ready, set, go—you know what to do! Hope this helps uplift a few other down days for some of you as well!
Love this idea! Here's my first contribution:
"It is wise to direct your anger towards problems, not people;
to focus your energies on answers, not excuses."
William Arthur Ward
Okay, going to try and resurrect this thing. Saw this one the other day:
"What I am looking for is not out there, it is in me."
--Helen Keller
I'm so glad there's a topic like this. I'm not sure this is "inspirational" but I do think it speaks truly.
"Every single person has at least one secret that would break your heart. If we could just remember this, I think there would be a lot more compassion and tollerence in the world." - Frank Warren, founder of the Post Secrets website.
Friends are angels without wings
Snowflower,
I like that one the best of all.
Thank u Glori!
Saw these on Facebook today and thought I'd share:
"We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope."
--Martin Luther King
"The more difficulties one has to encounter, within and without, the more significant and the higher in inspiration his life will be."
--Horace Bushnell
"He who has hope has everything."
--Arabian Proverb
wow I really like these. and they're so true. :)
"The whole of life is but a moment of time. It is our duty, therefore, to use it, not to misuse it." – Plutarch
"Sometimes the break in your heart is like the hole in the flute. Sometimes it’s the place where the music comes through."
--Andrea Gibson
"Where there is pain, there is feeling. And where there is feeling, there is still hope." (Nicholas Evans)
“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.” (Dalai Lama)
"When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the
closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” (Hellen Keller)
And one more:
“Not everything we have faced can be changed. But we can’t change something until it has been faced.” (James Baldwin)
?I love all of those! Was it Keller who said that one? I thouht it was Graham Bell. Ah well, my head's not screwed on quite straight. :P
Used this one in a speech the other day:
"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples."
--Mother Teresa
I like a lot of these. I'll definitely check back here the next time I have a "down" day.
"Oh, my friend, it's not what they take away from you that counts. It's what you do with what you have left."
—Hubert Humphrey
Here are a few more. I find a lot of these on TWLOHA's Facebook page.
"Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I’m possible.'"
--Audrey Hepburn
"I am not what happened to me, I am what I chose to become.”"
--Carl Jung
"I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it."
--Maya Angelou
Sorry for the spa, just finding lots of good stuff! This is awriting exercise I like to doften:
"Before you go to bed, write down three 'gratefuls' for the day and three 'did wells'
(they can even include something as simple as doing the laundry)—the results can
be amazing!"
--Carol Burnett
good idea :)
We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it.
~John Lennon
I love it!!
Me too. very well said :)
I'm pretty prone to homesickness, and ran across this quote just after my family and boyfriend moved me back to school yesterday. Strange how that works...
"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."
--A.A. Milne
I was given this quote from a Football Expert, but it's a good quote for those who are having a hard time with friends or family.
If it is to be, it's up to me.
Similarly to your quote:
"We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy."
--Joseph Campbell
A lame quote that's from a movie Forest Scump.
"My Mama always told me that life is like a box of Chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get"
nice topic idea. think post 12 is my favorite for now.
these were mostly said by famous people but i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one who comes up with quite a few of these of my own, just from our experiences and thoughts as we go through life
:)
My blog on here is filled with such musings as you speak of, Lion. And Alex, hahaha. And Lion, Andrea Gibson is pure genius. You should look up some of her poetry on YouTube if you haven't already heard it.
A quote my Parents always used to me and my younger sister, a quote they made up when we won't listen or obey my Parents orders.
"Rule Number 1, Parents are always right, Rule Number 2, if they're wrong, go back to Rule Number 1"
while I'm not one for inspirational quotes as a whole, I fail to see how the last post relates to this topic in any way. parents aren't always right; no one is. so, how is that inspirational?
Agreed! Lol
Saw this one today.
"What I came to realize is that fear, that's the worst of it. That's the real enemy.
So, get up, get out in the real world and you kick that bastard as hard as you can
right in the teeth." - Walter White
I saw this one on Twitter today:
"Sing your song. Dance your dance. Tell your tale."--Frank McCourt
The most potent weapon in the hands of the opressor, is the mind of the oppressed.
Bantu Stephen Biko
Taste test the world before you swallow what they say.
Karen Silkwood
